4.1 Describe the Cisco Unified Communications Manager digit analysis process

The Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) digit analysis process is a feature that allows CUCM to analyze and manipulate the digits that are dialed by a user. This process is used to determine the routing of the call, and it is an important aspect of call routing and call control in a Cisco Collaboration environment.

The digit analysis process in CUCM consists of several stages:

  1. Digit collection: The first stage in the process is digit collection, where the CUCM receives the digits dialed by the user and stores them in a buffer.

  2. Digit analysis: The second stage is digit analysis, where the CUCM analyzes the digits in the buffer to determine the routing of the call. The CUCM compares the dialed digits to the patterns defined in the dial plan to determine the destination of the call.

  3. Translation pattern matching: The third stage is translation pattern matching, where the CUCM applies any necessary translation patterns to the dialed digits. Translation patterns are used to change or manipulate the dialed digits to match a specific pattern or to add or remove digits.

  4. Route pattern matching: The fourth stage is route pattern matching, where the CUCM compares the dialed digits to the route patterns defined in the dial plan to determine the final destination of the call. Route patterns are used to match the dialed digits to a specific gateway or trunk.

  5. Call routing: The final stage is call routing, where the CUCM routes the call to the destination determined in the previous stages.

Dialed Number Analyzer allows analysis of a configured Cisco Unified Communications Manager dial plan and provides details about the call flow of dialed digits. In the pre deployment stage, you can use the tool to identify problems in a complex dial plan and fine tune the dial plan. You can also use the tool, after the dial plan is deployed, to identify real-time problems in the call flow of dialed digits.

Using Dialed Number Analyzer to analyze dial plans for a cluster of Cisco Unified Communications Manager systems and numerous devices may enable you to access the windows and enter data for analysis quickly. However, you may not be able to see results after you perform the analysis.

It's worth noting that the digit analysis process in CUCM is highly configurable and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of an organization. The digit analysis process is a key aspect of call routing and call control in a Cisco Collaboration environment, and a proper configuration of the digit analysis process is crucial for a properly functioning Cisco Unified Communications Manager.
