6.4 Describe Cisco Unified IM&P protocols and deployment

  • 6.4.a XMPP

  • 6.4.b High availability

Cisco Unified Instant Messaging and Presence (IM&P) is a Cisco collaboration solution that provides instant messaging (IM) and presence capabilities. Cisco Unified IM&P uses several protocols to provide these capabilities, including:

  1. Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP): XMPP is an open standard protocol that is used for instant messaging and presence. It allows for real-time communication and presence information to be exchanged between devices and servers.

  2. SIP/SIMPLE: SIP/SIMPLE is a set of extensions to the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) that is used for instant messaging and presence. It allows for real-time communication and presence information to be exchanged between devices and servers.

  3. Cisco proprietary protocols: Cisco Unified IM&P also supports proprietary protocols such as Cisco Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) and Cisco Unified Presence (CUP). These protocols provide additional features and capabilities that are not available with XMPP and SIP/SIMPLE.

Cisco Unified IM&P can be deployed in various deployment models, including:

  1. On-Premises: The on-premises deployment model is where Cisco Unified IM&P is installed and configured on the customer's own infrastructure. This deployment model allows for greater control and customization over the solution.

  2. Cloud: The cloud deployment model is where Cisco Unified IM&P is installed and configured in the cloud. This deployment model allows for easy scalability and eliminates the need for on-premises infrastructure.

  3. Hybrid: The hybrid deployment model is a combination of the on-premises and cloud deployment models. This deployment model allows for a mix of on-premises and cloud-based resources to be used to meet the specific needs of the organization.

It's worth noting that the specific deployment models and protocols can vary depending on the specific requirements and the architecture of the organization. Cisco Unified IM&P can be integrated with other Cisco collaboration solutions such as Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM) and Cisco Unity Connection to provide additional features and capabilities.
